My attempt at creating a LiveJournal meme.
Some time ago we were watching an old movie featuring Ronald Reagan as a wild young man who comes to a bad end. At the end of the film, one of the characters recites a poem neither of us had ever heard before, but liked immediately. I looked it up and created this page.
When I was in high school I used to spend my study-hall periods reading periodicals, among them National Review. It was there I first encountered non-moralistic conservatives. Although I had been raised to believe that smoking was a mortal sin, I couldn't help but cheer this defense of the vice by the celebrated misanthrope Florence King.
It did not, however, inspire me to take up smoking. That didn't happen until years later, when I was introduced to the joys of the briar. In the process of educating myself on the history of pipe smoking I discovered several references to a book by J.M. Barrie, My Lady Nicotine. It wasn't until recently that I found a copy of my own, so I'm creating an electronic edition for others to enjoy.
Just a little project to give myself a more intuitive grasp of what a billion dollars is worth.
