"Those who possess the power to defend themselves against threats by their neighbors, being thus in possession of the surest guarantee of security, live the most pleasant life with one another."
- Epicurus, Principal Doctrine 40
"An armed society is a polite society."
- Robert A. Heinlein
Two ways of saying the same thing.
Guns allow the weakest members of society to deal on an equal basis with the strongest. Violence is largely a crime of opportunity, where predators take advantage of their natural advantages to profit at the expense of others. Guns eliminate or minimize those advantages, and violence declines as a result.
A gun is a tool, Marion, no better or no worse than any other tool, an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.
As with any tool, getting good with a gun takes regular practice and training. The first class we took, way back when, was a basic NRA safety course at Shooter's World in Phoenix. To that we've added classes from Marksman's Enterprise, Louis Awerbuck of Yavapai Firearms Academy and Urban Firearms Institute.
Give us an excuse to burn powder, and we'll be there! We live near Ben Avery shooting range in Phoenix, where Jason shoots in Honeywell Sportsman Club and IDPA events. (No, I don't work at Honeywell. I just like to shoot.)
We also have a family membership at the Phoenix Rod and Gun Club. Our guests can shoot for free, and we've used this perq to introduce more than a few people to shooting. If you're going to be in the Phoenix area and would like to try see what all the fuss is all about, drop me a line.
Here's a cool little game I got from the Burris Optics site. Pot prairie dogs with three different rifles and a wide selection of scopes. Don't forget to dope the wind!
